I made this music for Fokko Oldenhuis and his Utrechtse Studenten Cantorij. It is about the clash between ideal and reality, the clash between west and east and about the communication between them -- the communication which came to a disastrous end last year in Afghanistan.
Te Deum Laudamus
Te Deum Laudamus, te Dominum confitemur
Te aeternum Patrem omnis terra veneratur
Tibi omnes Angeli; tibi caeli et universae potestetes.
Tibi Cherubim et Seraphim incessabili voce proclamant:
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth.
Min al acmaaq Sarakhtu ilayka yarab
Yarab, ismao sawtii
Litakun odhonaaka moSghayatayn ilaa sawtii taDarracaatii
In kunta turaaqibu al aathaama yarab
Yaa sayyid, faaman yakuf
We praise thee oh God
We praise thee oh God, we acknowledge thee to be the Lord
All the earth doth worship thee, the Father everlasting
To thee all Angels cry aloud, the Heavens, and all the Powers therein.
Cherubim and Seraphim cry out to you in endless praise
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts,
From the depths I cry to you
From the depths I cry to you, oh Lord!
Oh Lord, hear my voice
Let your ears be attentive to my prayers
If you were counting our sins, oh Lord
Oh Lord, who could stand...?
